Why is My Car’s Heater Not Working?

posted on

If your car has no heat, this can have you freezing in your car. Not only is it terribly uncomfortable driving in a cold car, but it can actually be dangerous, as you can’t defrost the windshield, either. If your heating system is not working properly, it is important to have it checked out because your engine cooling system may not be working properly either. This can lead to an overheated engine that can cause major engine damage. The heating system is made up of the heater core, blower fan, heater hoses, heater control valve, and the HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) control panel inside the cabin.A/C and Heating Repair in Alabama

Properly maintaining the cooling system is key for the heating system of your vehicle to work efficiently. There are multiple reasons why your heater may not be working, some more complex than others.

Reasons Why Your Car’s Heater May Not Be Working

  • Thermostat: If the thermostat isn’t opening and allowing coolant to flow, then your car won’t heat up. A malfunctioning thermostat can also cause your car to overheat and lead to much bigger problems.
  • Coolant Level: If your car is running low on coolant, there is a leak in the system, or if the core itself isn’t working properly, then this could be the cause of your car heater not working.
  • Blower Fan: If there aren’t any leaks and your coolant level is topped off, your blower fan may be the problem. Without a fan to blow the heat away, your car will never warm up inside.
  • Dirty Coolant: Coolant that contains rust particles or is otherwise contaminated, can block the heating core from circulating air into the cabin properly.
  • Depending on the problem, different types of repairs would be required. A decrease in the coolant level or a leak in the coolant system is one of the more common problems. Coolant doesn’t evaporate on its own.
