How to Choose the Right Tires for Your Lawn Mowers and Tractors

posted on
Its mowing season, so we need to get that lawn equipment up and running to keep our lawns looking good. Lawnmowers and lawn tractors are very effective in assisting you with your landscaping needs. They offer great traction and stability and can be used on flat and hilly surfaces. Maintaining the inner workings of your lawn equipment is very important, but so are its tires.Lawn Tires in Alabama

Like any part on a lawnmower or tractor, the tires can also wear out or get damaged and need to be replaced. As you get your equipment ready for the season, checking your lawn tires should be an important part of your routine maintenance. Worn-out tires can compromise your precious lawn and cause your mower or tractor to spin out or create deeper grooves in soft soil.

Steps in Choosing the Right Lawn Tires

There are many things to consider when purchasing tires for your lawn equipment. Getting the right tires for your lawn tractor or lawnmower is crucial to getting the best performance with minimal downtime. Here is what you need to know when buying lawn tires.

Size: Getting the right tire size is important to ensure the tires fit on your tractor or mower. Lawn tires have numbers on the tires which indicate the size. Lawn tires use a two or three-digit string of numbers to indicate the size of the tire when inflated. These numbers will represent the height, width, and rim diameter when it is mounted and inflated to factory-recommended air pressure. The numbers will be followed by the letters NHS which means Non-Highway Service, or in other words, it is not designed to withstand highway speeds.

Tread Pattern Types: The tread design is an important factor in making your lawn tire purchase. Different tread designs have a specific purpose depending on what terrain you mostly ride on, as well as which axle you are replacing the tires on.

  • Front Tires: A ribbed tire, also known as a multi-rib, should be used when replacing the front tires if it is not a drive axle. This tire has circumferential grooves around the tire and will not damage the grass.
  • Rear Tires: If your yard is mainly flat, you should use a less aggressive tread design. If your lawn has steep slopes and uneven terrain, you need tires with traction, long tread life, and durability. you’ll want to look at commercial grade, more aggressive tires with lugs or knobs.
  • Flat Free Tires: These are used on most lawn mowers and lawn tractors because they are lightweight and don’t add the extra weight foam-filled tires to your mower. They can withstand any debris in the way, without leaving you stranded, saving you time and money.
Ply Rating: Ply rating is the number on a tire that indicates the operating load the tire can carry. Lawn tires generally have one of three ply ratings: 2, 4, or 6. The higher the ply number, the higher the load- carrying capacities. The lower the ply rating, the softer the ride and will be more prone to a puncture.
